‘Malcolm and Marie’: a gut-wrenching love story that explores trauma

VALENTINE'S MOVIE RECOMMENDATION

“Malcolm and Marie” is a powerful and intense drama film that explores the complexities of romantic relationships and the human condition. The romance stars John David Washington and Zendaya as the titular characters, Malcolm and Marie, a long-time couple whose relationship is put to the test after a movie premiere where Malcolm had neglected to credit Marie as his inspiration for the film.

The film is shot in black and white and is set entirely in the couple’s home during the span of one night, creating an intimate and claustrophobic atmosphere that amplifies the tension between the characters. Throughout the movie we watch Malcolm and Marie build each other up and tear each other down, highlighting the idea of trauma bonding and codependency. The dialogue is raw and realistic, with both actors delivering powerful performances that are both moving and painful to watch.

The strength of this movie lies in its exploration of the characters’ inner turmoil and the way they interact with each other. Malcolm, a filmmaker, is struggling with his own ego and insecurities, while Marie is dealing with past traumas and resentments. Regardless of their trials we can still see the love and passion they have for each other while seemingly stuck in a cycle of destruction. As they argue and reconcile, we see both characters at their best and worst, making them relatable and human.

One of the standout performances is the monologue delivered by Zendaya’s character, Marie, where she lays bare her pain and hurt. It’s a powerful and emotional scene that showcases the actress’s range and depth.

Overall, “Malcolm and Marie” is a film that will leave a lasting impression. It’s a raw and honest portrayal of relationships and the human condition that will resonate with audiences long after the credits have rolled.
