Student artists distort reality

From paintings to sculptures, Room 147 is filled with a variety of colors, swirls, reflections, and frames that can take you away. The students of AP art classes have showcased their year’s worth of time and precision through their pieces displayed on the white walls of Gallery 2501, bringing life to the fluorescent room using illusion and reality.

The AP Painting and Drawing art class consists of 24 works of art created by the students themselves, from September to May.

Mr. Ceh, the AP Painting and Drawing teacher collaborates with the students throughout the process of selection for the AP exam as well as the AP Art Show.

“I take a look at them [the pieces] and if I think there’s better pieces because there could be a varying in opinion,” Ceh said. “I make my suggestions and they make their suggestions, and then I let them make the decision.”

Rebecca Symonds, Div. 573, has been an art major at Lane since her freshman year.

One of Symonds’ pieces in the Art Gallery showcases a portrait of her uncle John mixed with creative media; referring to the type of paint along with base in which the paint is applied, all while telling a story of their lives by adding a collage.

“[Symonds’ piece] has portrait backdrop of Frankenstein running down the stairs which shows how we used to watch scary movies together and it also portrays our relationship,” Symonds said.

The AP Art Show is an opportunity to showcase a school year’s worth of hard work by the students, as well as provide opportunities for the pieces to be bought.

“I had people come up to me and say, ‘Hey I saw your piece in the gallery!’ and it made me feel good to know that my piece was being recognized and appreciated,” Symonds said.

After hours and months of hard work and patience the pieces are then later returned to their artists to be taken home at the end of the year.

Gallery 2501 will remain infused with a maze of different displays of colors mixed with scenery to further take you into the world of art every day during lunch periods, up until senior finals.
