Brianna Galvin successfully tackling Taft player to stop the opposing team in their tracks.
The Lane Tech Girls Rugby Team defeated rival Taft High School by a score of 19-10 in the first round of the playoffs.
The game was tied at halftime 5-5.
To start the second half, freshman Roisin Gilbert found room on the outside of the scrum. Gilbert ran for 50 yards untouched to score the try, bringing the score to 10-5. Junior Maura Gilbert kicked the extra points to put Lane up 12-5.
After a scrum, the ball was picked up by freshman Nia Muhammed, who found the outside of the scrum and ran past the entire Taft team before being tackled in the In-Goal Area where Muhammed touched the ball to score the try. This brought the score to 17-5.
Maura Gilbert converted on the extra points again to extend Lane’s lead to 19-5.
After a successful Taft score followed by them bringing the ball all the way to the Goal Line, Lane had a successful defensive stop and prevented Taft from adding any more points to the score.
The defensive stop was the last play before the referee called the game due to lightning.
With that win, Lane moved on to the next round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
