Lane takes the field prior to their game against rival Simeon on September 15.

The Varsity football team suffered a big loss against rival Simeon in their first home divisional matchup of the season on Friday night. Coming off their first victory of the season the week before against South Shore, the 59 to 21 loss wasn’t what the team was looking for.

After kickoff, Lane drove the ball quickly down the field and finished the drive with a passing touchdown by senior quarterback Luke Calkins. However, the rushing attack by the Wolverines was too strong for Lane’s defense to hold in check.

Simeon broke off several long rushing touchdowns throughout the game while running a mostly read-option offensive playbook.

Simeon’s lead kept building prior to halftime. Lane’s offense had been completely stifled for multiple possessions until their defense recovered a fumble. The turnover and good field position sparked yet another touchdown drive to start a half by Lane. The momentum quickly faded and Lane couldn’t conjure any further scores until late in the fourth quarter.

At halftime the 1977 City Championship team was honored as a part of the alumni game festivities. The players in attendance from that team took the field along with team captain Ethan Galvin for some photos with the city championship trophy.

Head Coach Anthony Faltin acknowledged the loss as an example of the team’s inability to keep up their level of play throughout the entire game.

“It’s like we’re on and we’re off and we lack consistency and that’s been the problem the last couple years, but I do think we’re getting better,” Faltin said.

The reason that Faltin remains optimistic is because he said this game marked the most points that Lane has scored against Simeon in about a decade.

“We’re going to take those small victories and move forward,” Faltin said. “There is still a long season ahead of us.”

Lane’s next varsity football game is away against Curie on Thursday at 4:15 PM. The game will take place at Rockne Stadium.
