Varsity Wrestling won against Roosevelt 67-12 on Tuesday, Jan. 9. The team ended their season second in conference, with a record of 4-1.

The night also honored 12 Lane alumni from the early 90’s to last year’s graduating class including Junior Varsity coach Omar Tabbara. Many were city champions and state qualifiers.

Neither team brought a complete lineup with Lane forfeiting at 106 and Roosevelt forfeiting at 113 and 220.

Kaden Rosado, Div. 172, (120) brought the team’s first pin of the night at the third period. Co-captain Charlie Rivera, Div. 851 (126) won 6-5 in the next match, which head coach Matt Yan said was an important match for the team to see.

“We rolled the guy out, we didn’t let him escape,” Yan said. “I thought that was important that the team sees that it is important to ride people out at the end of the period. It’s tough to hold them at the end. We got to do it and [Rivera] pulled it out at the end.”

Adin Frost, Div. 150, (132) pinned his opponent at 2:50 in the second period. Marco Zavala, Div. 054, followed suit (136) after dropping from 145.

Roosevelt put up a fight and won at 145; however that was short-lived as co-captain Joaquin Montero, Div. 876, (152) scored eight points through a major decision that helped the team out, according to Yan.

Thomas West’s match, (160) was considered a “bright spot” to the night, Yan said. West gave the team his tenth pin of the season.

Samy Ahmed Yahia, Div. 082, (170) pinned his opponent at 4:41 in the third period, while Marcos Johnson, Div. 159, (182) also pinned a considerate opponent after being bumped up to a heavier weight class.  

“He’s not afraid to rise up to the challenge,” Yan said. “We’re really proud of him there — that was a gutsy performance.”

Danny Shannon, Div. 072, (195) earned a speedy pin at 0:51 in the first period.

The last match was sealed with a victory by Francisco Dowdy, Div. 172, (285) scoring a pin in the second period.  

“The guys are going for pins, putting guys on their back,” Yan said. “That’s what we try and aim for in wrestling — that’s what we’re striving for.”

Yan was pleased with his team’s overall performance.

“I can’t really ask for more,” Yan said. “We’re going to continue on our techniques and in terms of our results. This was what we were kind of hoping for.”
