Letterman Club enforces new rules on members

The Letterman Club at Lane has begun to enforce new rules on its members:  meetings every Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. and removal from the club if a member has two absences. In order to join Letterman Club, the athlete needs a teacher recommendation and must write a personal statement about why they want to be a part of the club.

Letterman Club is an organization of varsity athletes dedicated to giving back to the school through community service. The club has sponsored three events since the beginning of the year: the Anti-Bullying Walk in October and the Anti-Gun Violence Rally in November, as well as volunteering at the Boy’s Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament.

Jean Ang, Div. 650, is in the club for basketball and said that the new rules are appropriate.

“If you’re going to dedicate [yourself] to anything, you should be fully dedicated,” Ang said.

Albert Montes, Div. 668, said that the rules are fair enough because they takes away anybody that’s not really committed to what the Letterman Club stands for.

“The rule about having to write an essay to get in [Letterman Club] is a way to make that it so that the people who are in the club ones who really will contribute to it,” Montes said. “However, if someone is absent from school on a meeting day, I don’t think it should be counted. It’s unfair to someone who really just can’t come to school.”

Victor Arizmendi, Div. 652, said writing the essay was a lot work, but it was worth it.

“The club is meant to give back to the community,” Arizmendi said. “It’s nice to know that you’re making a difference for something, like the Anti-Gun [Violence] Rally or the Anti-Bullying Walk.”

Emma Boyd, Div. 654, said that the rules are a good idea, especially concerning attendance.

“It shows that we support each other and that we are committed to the club,” Boyd said. “[Letterman] is not just about the sports, it’s about us working together to be a good representation of the Lane Tech community.”
